Wendell Foster creates area’s first Aktion Club

On December 12, 2018, Wendell Foster started the area’s first Aktion Club. Aktion Club is one of the Kiwanis family’s Service Leadership Programs and the only service club for adults with disabilities, with more than 12,000 members worldwide. Their mission is to provide adults with disabilities an opportunity to develop leadership skills and serve their communities.

John Gleason, the local Kiwanis Club Advisor says, “Members of Aktion Club are people who want to serve and improve their communities. They are energetic and dedicated to making a difference in the world.”

Cindy Huston, Wendell Foster’s Facility Advisor, was pleased with the enthusiasm shown by the club members at their first meeting in January.  As we were discussing community service projects, the conversation shifted to Night to Shine, a prom for adults with disabilities sponsored by the Tim Tebow Foundation and hosted locally by Life Community Church. All of the club members attended Night to Shine, which happened around the world on the Friday before Valentine’s Day.  Thus the first community service project came into play, by deciding to have a food drive for the church as a way of giving back.  Canned goods, cereal, peanut butter, pasta, and toiletries were collected during the month of February and Aktion Club members delivered to the church on February 28.
