OWENSBORO, KENTUCKY – Wendell Foster, a local 501(c)3 non-profit organization serving people with disabilities, sustained major damages to its campus during the March 15 hailstorm. The storm, which swept across Daviess County in the early morning hours, impacted all 26 buildings at the non-profit.
Damages include flooding in buildings, shattered windows, and damages to gutters, downspouts, siding, and air conditioning units. Every roof sustained damage, along with more than 20 of Wendell Foster’s vehicles.
Doug Hoyt, Chief Executive Officer at Wendell Foster, said that assessing the destruction on the campus was a monumental effort. Wendell Foster’s facility sits on six city blocks. “We’ve spent the last 30 days walking every inch of this campus with insurance adjusters, roofers, and contractors to understand the scale of the damage. It’s been an enormous task, but one we have tackled with urgency and care – because this isn’t just property, these are homes, therapy spaces and safe havens for the people we serve,” explained Hoyt.
Since March 15, the organization’s priority has been the safety and security of its clients. During and after the storm, Wendell Foster employees worked quickly to ensure that everyone was sheltered and comfortable. “Our commitment to those we serve has never wavered,” said Hoyt. “With the dedication of our staff, we implemented temporary modifications to the affected areas so we can continue providing our services.
Hoyt stated that after insurance, the out-of-pocket costs to repair the damages are expected to exceed $500,000. “As a non-profit, these costs are unexpected and devastating. Much of the damages occurred at the homes our clients live in, so it’s a priority to get these structures repaired,” said Hoyt.
To assist in funding the out-of-pocket repair costs, Wendell Foster has launched its Hailstorm Recovery Efforts Campaign. The community is encouraged to donate directly to the effort by visiting wendellfoster.org/hailstorm. Donations can also be mailed to Wendell Foster, 815 Triplett Street, Owensboro, KY 42303, with “Hailstorm Recovery Efforts” in the check memo.
“The support from the community will allow us to restore our campus and ensure a sustainable future for the individuals who depend on us. I am confident that we will end this journey stronger than before,” said Hoyt.
